The Story

There are two kinds of Boulder gravel riders: the ones who talk about Magnolia Road, and the ones who've actually climbed it. This loop makes you the second kind, then rewards you properly.

You leave town on the creek path and turn up Boulder Canyon with the commuters, but only for a few kilometers — then the road tilts and everything changes. Magnolia gains its reputation one switchback at a time: steep, honest, and paved just long enough to lull you before the dirt starts. Up top the washboard rolls through ponderosa parkland with the Indian Peaks stacked on the horizon, and the riding turns fast and playful.

The halfway prize is Gold Hill, a genuine 1870s mining town that never quite noticed the twentieth century. Stop at the General Store. Get the lemonade and a breakfast burrito. You've earned neither yet — the store sits before the last rollers — but nobody's checking.

The descent down Sunshine Canyon is the victory lap: 900 vertical meters of grin, champagne gravel up high turning to smooth pavement as the city rises to meet you. Watch your speed through the lower corners; the locals walk dogs here.

This is the route I take visiting riders on when they ask what Boulder gravel is about. It's all of it, in one lap.
